Church statement on same sex marriage

A note from Ps Luis regarding the upcoming plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

We would like to encourage all Christians and all Australians to vote on the fast-approaching postal plebiscite on the issue of same-sex marriage. The far-reaching consequences of changing the legal definition of marriage should be considered with all seriousness.

Our position as a church is clear in that we stand by the Word of God and we believe this needs to be respected. The Bible clearly states that marriage is between a man and a woman, and as a matter of our faith and teaching this is what we believe.

It is highly important that this debate should be respectful and that all efforts be made to be understanding of each others views. At our church, we love and respect all people regardless of their views or sexuality. However, we will continue in the teachings of God, knowing that He has given us freewill and a choice to follow Him.

This is also a matter of religious freedom and it is important for people with opposing views to understand just how important faith is to many people in our society.

Regardless of the outcome of this plebiscite, we will continue in our Faith and strongly oppose any legislative measures which would undermine or compromise our freedom and beliefs.

Our democratic society must function on the basis that we are all able to freely share our opinions and thoughts on how our country should be run in a respectful and open way.

As a church, we know we do not stand alone, and we believe all Christians and all Australians should take this opportunity to have our say. Let us remember that we all have an equal right to express our values and beliefs for the benefit of our nation. We encourage all Christians to engage fairly, respectfully with this debate and to take the time to vote.

In Christ,

Dr. Luis Cabral
